As the festive season approaches and the weather warms up, we begin to spend more of our leisure time outdoors. It’s a time for celebrating with food and festivities around backyard pools and decks.
Areas that haven’t been used during the cooler months suddenly become the centre of attention and may need a refresh to maximise their potential and impact.
Happily, there are some simple things you can do to achieve this yourself. More on that later.
First let’s consider your outdoor living spaces from a design point of view.
Decks, outdoor patios and pool areas need to be functional and comfortable, but can also be designed to complement the story of your inside spaces.
Here are some things to consider:
- Protection from the elements
- Food preparation areas
We have all been to gatherings where seating has been an issue, you can’t see what you are eating and a sudden summer storm has driven everyone indoors. Suddenly, you are standing elbow to elbow and balancing your meal and cutlery precariously in the hope you don’t end up wearing it!
Planning out your space is an essential part of the preparation for hosting an event or creating a living area you can regularly enjoy.
Consider the list above and ask yourself how you will be primarily using the space.
Are you an avid entertainer or do you only entertain guests occasionally?
Are you looking for practical or mood lighting, or a combination of the two?
Do you need a dedicated outdoor kitchen or can you cater using either a barbecue or your indoor kitchen?
Do you want to make a statement with your outdoor spaces or use them to compliment the style and design of indoor areas?
Now you have asked the hard questions, let’s look at some simple things you can do.
Introducing colour can refresh an entertainment area for the warmer months. You can add colour and impact through accessories and plants.
You can purchase outdoor cushions and napery in many colours and styles. I recommend speaking to a nurseryman to find out the best plants for your needs.
Strategically placed lighting creates mood and atmosphere. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to add mood lights to a space. Hardware and retail stores sell solar lights that don’t require installation by an electrician. You can also find inexpensive candles and lanterns in styles to suite your theme.
There are many things to take into consideration when preparing your outdoor living spaces. The important thing is to create a space you will enjoy and can celebrate with friends and family.
I enjoy designing outdoor living areas that are functional and beautiful. I especially love it when clients share stories with me about how they are enjoying their new living spaces with friends and family.
Practical can also be beautiful. Ask me how…
